Notice: GeekPress is back up and running, thanks to Paul! It's still a not-so-serious tech news blog, but the format is significantly looser. Diana, having given up programming for philosophy, has her own philosophical blog NoodleFood. More of her work can be found at DianaHsieh.com.

GeekPress on Ice
by Diana Hsieh / 7 February 2001

Something amazing happened at GeekPress HQ today: it snowed!

Paul and I live in Alpine, California, which is a 25 miles east of San Diego. Since we're at about 2000 feet and inland, our weather is more volatile than at the beach, but it is still quite rare for the temperature to get anywhere near 32 degrees. (Just this past weekend, in fact, it was 80 degrees during the day.)

But... Today, it rained. This evening, it hailed. Tonight, it snowed. Accumulation totaled at least a half an inch. Wow!

It was, as snow often is when it first falls, breathtakingly beautiful. (Paul and I will soon be appreciating that beauty more frequently, as we are moving to Denver in late March.)

This first shot is of the unadulterated snow just outside our front door. The little bridge over our fishpond is pretty well covered with snow, as are the sidewalks. (More snow fell after I took these pictures.)

Then, I let our two German Shepherds dogs outside. I suspect that neither has ever seen snow before, given that we adopted Kate (the blonde) from San Diego and Abby (the redhead) from Los Angeles.

After the initial visual and olfactory inspections were finished, Abby proceeded to eat snow until we called her inside. Kate wasn't so impressed with the stuff.

I'm sure that the snow will be melted by the time that I get up tomorrow, but it was fun while it was here!
