Notice: GeekPress is back up and running, thanks to Paul! It's still a not-so-serious tech news blog, but the format is significantly looser. Diana, having given up programming for philosophy, has her own philosophical blog NoodleFood. More of her work can be found at DianaHsieh.com.

The Economist reports on an unpublished manuscript that is rapidly making the rounds through the scientific community purportedly describing how to make a room temperature superconductor. The article is careful to note that the claim has neither been confirmed nor disproven by the various independent laboratories attempting to duplicate the reported results.
This is either a huge breakthrough or another cold fusion fiasco. No doubt we'll find out which soon.

Most people see themselves as above average in morals and skills, even though (by definition) that's just not possible. But now researchers have managed to pin down whether we are wrong about our own superiority or about the inferiority of others.

The RIAA is running into some bizarre problems in their attempts to sell music over the internet. They don't want to share the profits with the other copyright holders, namely the publishers (who represent composers and lyricists). The publishers aren't too pleased.
It boggles the mind that the RIAA could turn around and make the same arguments that they were just disputing in the lawsuit with MP3.com!

A disgrunted employee of KragenTech on a conference call "representationally opened fire on his geographically distributed co-workers," throwing everyone into a panic.
Thank goodness that the assailant was "all but actually subdued by a pair of Kragen security guards telecommuting from their homes in Toronto, Canada, and Sao Paulo, Brazil."
