Notice: GeekPress is back up and running, thanks to Paul! It's still a not-so-serious tech news blog, but the format is significantly looser. Diana, having given up programming for philosophy, has her own philosophical blog NoodleFood. More of her work can be found at DianaHsieh.com.

A year ago, web-based magazines like Salon and Slate thought that they'd displace old media print competitors and take over all their advertising revenue. Now many of them have started to tap the same old media (such as print and radio) in hopes of mere survival.
My, how times have changed...

Semi-serious article about how reporters writing about the "Napster=theft?" use Napster itself, calling it "research". One San Francisco Chronicle reporter said, "using Napster is important as a research tool: 'Until you actually try it, you can't get a feel for how seductive it can be'"...
The story of the encounter between Brad King (reporter for Wired) and Hilary Rosen of the RIAA is also funny.

The computer security firm Foundstone will be teaching a course called "Ultimate Hacking: Hands On" for lawyers interested in learning more about computer security issues. As the title suggests, the students will learn how to exploit weaknesses in supposedly protected systems via a hands-on approach.
This adds a new dimension to the phrase "criminal lawyer".

Palm will be releasing a new handheld with an expansion slot and Handspring will be releasing a new Visor with a slim, sleek profile.
If I didn't know better, I'd suspect this was all just a ploy to get me to buy more of their products...

Despite condemnation from religious groups (and some scientists), Italian physician Severino Antinori and American physician Panayiotis Zavos have announced that they will proceed with their plans to clone a human being.
My favorite part: an "unnamed Mediterranean country" has offered them a location where they can work legally.

The NSA released the code for their "Security-Enhanced" Linux to the open source community. The article gives a good overview of the security architecture. (Link via Cryptome.)
Favorite quote: "If you haven't been following the cryptography area lately, let me assure you that this action by the NSA was the crypto equivalent of the Pope coming down off the balcony in Rome, working the crowd with a few loaves of bread and some fishes, and then inviting everyone to come over to his place to watch the soccer game and have a few beers. There are some things that one just never expects to see, and the NSA handing out source code along with details of the security mechanism behind it was right up there on that list."
