The Russian government has taken out a $200 million insurance policy in case of any damage caused by the Mir space station landing on Earth.
If it lands on a large city, the damage could be well in excess of $200 million. But I suppose that would be the insurance companies' problem.

Scott Wasson performed extensive comparisons between Intel's Pentium 4 and AMD's Athlon CPUs. Athlon came out on top, but it was a pretty close race.
Personally, I'm an AMD fan: I'm just none too thrilled about paying for all those Blue Man commercials with Intel's higher prices!

Two MIT programmers have written the shortest known program to implement the outlawed DeCSS algorithm for decrypting DVDs. Their program only takes up 7 lines (!) of Perl code. Because the program doesn't include the 5 byte title key, it theoretically shouldn't violate the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

Coffee Pot Retiring

The first webcam (which actually predates the web) is soon to be retired. The coffee pot cam, designed to prevent those intrepid computer scientists from walking down several flights of stairs only to find an empty pot, will not be needed much longer, as the department is moving.
Truly sad to see such important relics of history destroyed willy-nilly!
