Notice: GeekPress is back up and running, thanks to Paul! It's still a not-so-serious tech news blog, but the format is significantly looser. Diana, having given up programming for philosophy, has her own philosophical blog NoodleFood. More of her work can be found at DianaHsieh.com.

Cecil explains what the 1952 "Killer Fog" of London was, along with a bit of history on fog lore.
The mentioned Stephen King story, "The Mist" in Skeleton Crew, is one of my favorite creepy stories!

IBM has released a new concept laptop (the ThinkPad TransNote) that opens like a (complex) book rather than a clamshell. That configuration allows it "to perform several tricks that will amaze and confuse onlookers."
As the article concludes, the TransNote embodies the best and worst of both a full-size laptop and subnotebooks. Nevertheless, it sounds like there are some good ideas in it!

People seem to be getting overly attached to their Aibos, Sony's robotic dog. A grant has even been awarded to a scientist who will be studying "whether children can discriminate between robots and real animals [and whether] Aibos have therapeutic value in retirement homes."
My beloved stuffed animals, Teddy Bear and his brother Piggy Bear, helped me suffer through many years of flesh-and-blood animal deprivation!

A picture of a man apparently eating a dead baby has sparked police investigations by Scotland Yard and the FBI, supposedly because of child abuse issues. But as the Register notes, "Evidence of child abuse? Evidence of doll's-head-and-duck's-carcass abuse is more like it."
The original pictures are available here, and the site owners' scathing response to the law enforcement overreaction is available here.

MIT scientist Hugh Herr and colleagues have built a robotic fish with a microprocessor "brain" powered by biological muscles and successfully taken it for a test swim.
What happens when a cyborg animal with an electronic brain and a biological body meets one with a biological brain and an electronic body?
