A theme park has opened in Lithuania which is a bizarre cross between Disneyland and a Soviet gulag. Stalinworld includes guard towers (staffed by machine-gun toting mannequins), the cafeteria serves gruel, and "concealed speakers will also broadcast screams of torture victims."
Fun for the whole family!

Looking for a Klein Bottle?

An entertaining article about Clifford Stoll and his small company Acme Klein Bottle, which sells high quality hand-blown glass Klein bottles. This is also the same man who wrote the classic book The Cuckoo's Egg about his exploits in tracking down a computer cracker.
My favorite is the two-chambered Drinking Mug Klein Bottle -- only $80. His entire site is quite funny (especially for math geeks), and the products sold are real.

In this month's Cryptogram, Bruce Schneier argues that the proposed CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable Media) is both a bad idea and will be ineffective.
Very clear analysis, as usual.

Cigarettes can kill

A New Jersey man has been charged with killing his roommate when, as a prank, he loaded some cigarette butts in his antique muzzle-loading black powder rifle, aimed it at the roommate, and pulled the trigger. Three cigarette butts penetrated the victim's rib cage and lodged above his heart, killing him. (Link from Obscure Store.)
One of the more unusual cigarette-related deaths. If the gun owner had followed the standard Four Rules of Gun Safety, this never would have happened.

How to sneak up on a moose

As part of his project on studying moose response to predator scents, Nevada scientist Joel Berger has devised an unusual method of sneaking up on his subjects. He and a research assistant wear a special "moose suit", which was created by one of the costume designers from "Star Wars" in order to get within observation distance. Part of his experiment includes throwing "snowballs soaked with wolf, bear and human urine at the moose". (Link from Honeyguide.)
The picture of the two men in the moose suit is priceless! I do feel sorry for the poor research assistant whose job it is to be the rear end...

Emotional faces vs. gender

Apparently, men and women have different facial expressions when it comes to expressing emotion. And men show their feelings more in the lower left quandrant of their faces, while women tend to use the whole face.
mhh5 says: Someone's gotta incorporate this info into avatar technology.... If it's really true, that is.
