German physicists have created clusters of sodium atoms with the peculiar property that increasing the temperature causes their internal energy to decrease (or in reverse, adding energy causes their temperature to drop). The article notes that, "this may sound counter-intuitive, but is in agreement with theory, and no law of thermodynamics is violated."
I wish I could find an economic analogue, where spending more money causes my bank balance to go up...

Stephan Somogyi investigates the power consumption of all manner of electricity-hungry machines, from hard disks to tape drives. Given the California power crisis, he argues that perhaps it's time for consumers to start creating demand for power-saving features.
I might be willing to go without heat due to the electricity crisis, but there's no way that I'm shutting down any of my Linux boxes!
