Notice: GeekPress is back up and running, thanks to Paul! It's still a not-so-serious tech news blog, but the format is significantly looser. Diana, having given up programming for philosophy, has her own philosophical blog NoodleFood. More of her work can be found at DianaHsieh.com.

The author says that even if one's only source of revenue is banner advertising, it is possible for an online news website to make money by keeping costs low and adopting a business model more like that of the free alternative alternative newspapers found in most cities, as opposed to the mainstream dailies.

A recent psychological study supposedly indicates that self-esteem is the greatest psychological need, even ahead of "popularity, influence, money and luxury". Curiously enough, this was true for the American sample, but not for the Korean sample.

The CIA plans on using a version of Safeweb to surf the internet without leaving any traces of its presence. In addition, the technology leaves open the possibility that it could launch denial-of-service attacks from multiple sources safely and anonymously, which the article calls the equivalent of an "electronic silencer".
Of course, soon they won't be the only ones with that capacity (if that isn't already the case)...

Many prospective employees are deciding that they want good old fashioned salary and bonuses, rather than stock options, given the recent market slump.
I think this is a good thing, because it discourages the recent wave of Las Vegas-like gambling mentality in the tech sector. The separate issue of whether startups are a "drain or a wellspring of innovation" is addressed in this other interesting article.

An Israeli company has invented Power Paper -- a super-thin battery that can be printed onto packages like ink. They anticipate that this can be used by marketers to create glitzy high-tech packaging, such as CD covers that light up and play music when customers pick up the box.
Great -- I wasn't getting enough flashing lights and random sounds when shopping. (Actually, some of the other "smart packinging" uses mentioned could be ok.)
