Notice: GeekPress is back up and running, thanks to Paul! It's still a not-so-serious tech news blog, but the format is significantly looser. Diana, having given up programming for philosophy, has her own philosophical blog NoodleFood. More of her work can be found at DianaHsieh.com.

Wow! It snowed over a half an inch here at GeekPress HQ outside of San Diego. I even have pictures (with our dogs) to prove it!
Our doggies are going to have to get used to the cold and the snow, as we're moving to Denver in late March. (Anyone looking to buy a gorgeous house in Alpine, CA? We have one for sale!)

SatireWire offers us a set of useful prayers to Saint Isidore in anticipation of the saint being named the patron saint of the internet.
My favorite prayers are for the adolescent trying to get around filtering software and the two prayers for DSL users. The poor souls!

Two Australians hit pay dirt (sort of) with their web cam designed to capture intruders (via a motion sensor) when their house was burgled. The mugshots of the criminals (along with avi movies) have been posted to their web site, Wanted Dead or Alive.
Web cams might end up being a low-cost burglary prevention tool. Who would have ever thought they'd have a non-frivolous, non-sexual use?!?

Never go skiing with a mobile phone

The Register tells this tragic story of a man caught in an avalanche while carrying his mobile phone. Unfortunately, the phone was left on and it interfered with avalanche transceiver signal which rescuers normally use to locate people in such predicaments. As a result, he died.
On the other hand, many people who go skiing and hiking find a mobile phone invaluable in case they get lost. Hence, the key is to keep the phone turned off until needed. (The article also lists a few other bizarre cell phone-related deaths. The article is worth reading for the second paragraph alone.)

An interview with Jef Raskin, creator of the Macintosh Project at Apple. He sharply criticizes the whole windows-icon-menu-pointer paradigm for GUI's, and instead advocates radical new approaches like his zooming interface.
He's also written a (dense) summary page for his new book, "The Humane Interface".
Gnutella swapping cookies, too

Unwary Gnutella users may be allowing others access to more than their music files. Users who aren't careful about specifying exactly which folders can be shared have exposed their cookies to the rest of the world, which can include unencrypted passwords and other private data.
