According to a new book, both the Lost Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail may be hidden on the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm. (Link from Metafilter).

Pirates Beware: We're Watching

Music and movie companies have started adopting a different strategy to combat what they call piracy. They will begin monitoring traffic in and out of ISP's looking for anything that matches their profiles of copyrighted material, then send warning messages to the ISP's to contact the offending users to remove the disputed files.
This "solution" is bound to fail, because it will be too easy for file traders to circumvent. As the article points out, even simple encryption renders the system useless.

The neighborhood in which Paul and I live, Palo Verde Ranch (in Alpine CA), is currently on fire. We might need to evacuate on short notice. So don't expect much GeekPress from us. Update: I've added an image of the fires now southwest of us.

A commission investigating the Stasi (the former East German secret police) has discovered that East German dissidents were exposed to radioactive chemicals so that they could be tracked by Stasi operatives with vibrating armpit Geiger counters.
Dissidents were sometimes identified and then tracked by treating the floor of a dissident meeting room. Very crafy!
