Notice: GeekPress is back up and running, thanks to Paul! It's still a not-so-serious tech news blog, but the format is significantly looser. Diana, having given up programming for philosophy, has her own philosophical blog NoodleFood. More of her work can be found at DianaHsieh.com.

A group of NASA scientists is proposing using a swarm of small intelligent robots to explore the asteroid belt. These robots, known as ANTS ("Autonomous Nano Technology Swarm"), would function like a crude insect colony, with ruler and messenger "ants" guiding the bulk of worker ants which would share the data with each other and the rulers "in a way that makes the collective behave – Borglike..."

One of the better of the many end-of-the-year news summaries is the Murky Awards from the San Jose Mercury News for the most bizarre or quirky business news from Silicon Valley.
My favorite was the law firm that mailed free novelty paperweights to various Silicon Valley companies shaped like realistic-looking-but-fake hand grenades, which then triggered at least two calls to the Santa Clara County bomb squad.

Your favorite Wired reporters make predictions for 2001, from serious (the growth of P2P) to just funny (even shorter attention spans).
The NY Times also has a more serious cyberlaw journal on predictions for 2001.

Are you confused by all those countries out there with funny-sounding names? This handy guide summarizes the key facts about the rest of the world. (Of course, it's politically incorrect...)
A perfect New Year's gift for the next leader of the free world!...

CNET asked its writers to summarize the top tech news stories in Haiku form. Some are good, some are lame.

Top art forger's works being forged

The works of the famous art forger Elmyr de Hory, who fooled collectors in the 1950's and 1960's with his fake Picassos, Modiglianis, and Matisses, are now worth thousands of dollars in their own right. As a result, forged versions of his works have now started appearing. Experts believe that many of these "fake fakes" originate from multiple sources in the Far East.
Of course, only the poorly done "fake fakes" are being caught. Who knows how many genuine-looking "fake fakes" are slipping through?
